Serving the people is an incredible honour
Ibrahim Ajani Owolabi was born into the family of Chief Monsuru Owolabi and Kudirat Adetoun Alli who both raised him in Lagos State. Just like his father, Ajani’s love for his community is unwavering. According to him he said. “My father taught me that when the community does well, so does everyone within it, and when one of our neighbours is suffering, we all suffer.” Popularly called Ajani “Seniyan” (Ajani “is a good person”) a name culled from his father’s name Alao Seniyan, believes in service to community as one of our responsibilities regardless of one’s age. While growing up in Lagos, he mastered the value of hard work and giving back to his community.
Ibrahim Ajani Owolabi attended Lebanese community school, Christland School and Grace Children’s school for his primary and post primary education while in his quest to meet his yearning for education which has since remained his passion, proceeded to the prestigious University of Bedfordshire where he graduated with a B.A. Hons in Graphics and Advertising . Not satisfy with that, he went on to obtain a Masters in Marketing Communication from Middlesex University and Canterbury University- (TFe) teaching . When asked on his reason for accumulations of educational qualification Ajani said “education is the fulcrum which a formidable future is built”
As an entrepreneur from birth, during his school days, young Ajani took advantage of the growing number of the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom and began organizing shows; meet the stars, concert and other social activities to earn more money. Not only did he become a household name, he endears himself to their heart because of his moderate rate in his service delivery. He was able to fully optimise the increase in demand and this business strategy helped him build a steady supply chain for importation and production of Nigerian food for the Nigerian market in the United Kingdom, providing jobs and business opportunities for Nigerians at home.
This was all to change and mark a turning point in his life after he lost one of his closest friends to gang violence in London. While the death left an indelible mark in his heart, it inspired him to move his wealth of experience from professional entrepreneurship to social endeavour allowing him to touch more lives than he can imagine. The aftermath of the event “made life meaningless when we care less about the issue that creates a vacuum in the heart of people and social service can fill up the vacuum”. Compassion should not just be a job; it should be a lifestyle.
After closing from his daytime teaching job, Ajani will volunteer in the evening with 2020 change a non for profit to mentor gang member, prisoners and disenfranchised youth wanting a second chance in life. He also helps them develop businesses, find jobs for them to ensure they are resettled into the community and live a productive life.
On returning to the country and with the experience through Erasmus plus program that allowed him worked closely with governments in France and United Kingdom, he took up an Internship job in his father office at the Federal House of Representatives as a Legislative aide, which helped him to hone his socio-political skills. While many will sit back to enjoy being the child of a High ranking Federal Legislature, he was propelled to succeed irrespective of the privilege he had. He took up vital responsibilities, such as attending meetings, drafting of bills, responding to correspondents, and oversight function on the constituency projects among others.
He returned to his personal business after his father voluntarily did not seek a re-election, he continue to engage his community, helped indigent students with tuition fees, supported SME and took care of medical bills of some. With the passing of the not too young bill, Ajani finally bowed to the pressure of his constituency who wanted more from their representative and urged him to contest. He joined the contest for his party’s ticket for Lagos State House of Assembly seat, he won the ticket in a landslide victory.
Ajani is passionate, and committed, about Lagos mainland, engaging the youth and ensuring sustainable business development. While there are several of legislation sponsored in the past by his predecessor, Ajani is aware that more can be done to improve the present conditions of people in the community that will impact even the most anonymous resident.
While we marvel at the youthfulness of Ajani which has seen him visited all the wards, attended town hall meetings, had interactive sessions with his constituents during his empowerment programs amongst others one cannot help but talk about his humility which is second to none and his mantra is “be the change you wish to see”. He has not only embodied that, he had lived it and his constituency cannot wait to have him win and resume the service to humanity he is destined for. Ajani is in the House for us all, he will be a voice for you at the Lagos State House of Assembly, he carries this aspiration of the youth, the hope of the common man and Ajani will represent us well.
